The Royal Danish Ballet goes Petipa
Nikolaj Hübbe presented the season plan for 2010 – 2011. The season will include a new “Sleeping Beauty” by Christopher Wheeldon and Peter Martins “Swan Lake”. Nikolaj Hübbe and Sorella Englund will also direct a new production of Bournonville’ s “A Folks Tale” with a décor inspired by the Danish painter Wilhelm Hammershøj and a 1860 s
etting, designed by Mia Steensgaard, who also did costumes and décor for the RDB’s lighter “Manon”. Hübbe is also contemplating some changes to his Fellini-styled “Napoli”, which will also be part of the season. Bournonville will also be present in the form of “The Dancing School from The Conservatory” which will be includes in a programme with a new production of “Etudes”, directed by Thomas Lund and Nikoaj Hübbe and a new work by Johan Kobborg.
In order to attract a new audience, Hübbe is presenting a programme of “Serenade” , a pas de deux and Jorma Uotinen’s “Earth”, which was choreographed for RDB in 2005. The season will also include John Neumeier’s “A midsummer Night’s Dream”, a production with The Ballet School’s “Company B, A choreography workshop, and guests appearances from The Pantomime Theatre, Tim Rushton’s company and Bill. T. Jones. The season will also include a small scale summer tour to the provinces.
At the press conference Hübbe stated his commitment to keep RDB as a classical based company, hence the large dose of Petipa. He is downsizing the number of Balanchine ballets, partly due to the commitment of the tour that will not include Balanchine works, and partly to avoid creating the image of a satellite NYCB.
The Royal Theatre is facing budget cuts, but a CEO Erik Jacobsen stated, the ballet would not be hit as hard as the opera and drama departments. The ballet has managed to attract new sponsors, which is the main reason for the numbers of new productions and US tour.
