La Bayadére" starts out with three casts, which has become almost a standard practice over the last years. Understandable as the number of programs has been cut for financial reasons. To give each dancer their due, sharing more roles gives each dancer a reasonably number of leading roles. However the principle does diminish the director’s possibility to make super teams and super ballets. In the case of "La Bayadère", each cast has a stellar performer in the lead couple, but unfortunately misses the ultimate goal of having equal meet equal.

Nikolaj Hübbe has defined the Russian tradition as one of the cornerstones of the RDB, and has
over his past seasons presented productions of "The Sleeping Beauty", "The Nutcracker", "Swan Lake" and "Don Quixote" and has now set his sight on " La Bajadère", which has never been done by the company before. The first night became a triumph not only for his drilling of the corps and his propensity for redressing the plot but also for his psycho-analytical urge.

Great Expectations

The Royal Danish Ballet are keeping busy while preparing for this year's great premiere: Nikolaj Hübbe and Eva Draw's "La Bayadere". Spare time is used on developing the company's own choreographic talents, entertaining children and taking "La Bayadere" to New York and "Dancing with the Stars".
