Autumn Repertoire af Royal Danish Ballet
Twyla Tharp:
"Come Fly Away"
Esther Lee Wilkinson:
"The Fable Maker"
Audition at Royal Danish Ballet
October 2013
In a season full of reach out projects, Esther Lee Wilkinson's "The Fable Maker" created for the RDB ballet children proves that it is possible to make a high quality reach out project.
The strategy of getting full houses by playing Twyla Tharp's "Come Fly Away" has proved successful if ticket sale in the only parameter. An extra performance is planned. Only time can tell if this new audience will come again to the regular repertoire. Artistically the work does not cater for the RDB talent and as it uses only 14 dancers a night and only have two casts, most of the dancers will not be on stage until November. I hope this will not be a pattern for the coming seasons.
Is it a positive development that the RDB can sell ticket in spades for a non ballet production? Not in my view, and I hope the MD of the Royal Theatre will remember that good ballets makes equally good box office.
