The repertoire for 2021-2022 includes yet another run of Twyla Tharp´s: “Come Fly Away”, first shown by RDB in 2013. "Come Fly Away" will play 15 performances starting September 3 on the Old Stage.
This year the “Dance2Go” programme will include a Homage to August Bournonville, including Liv Thomsen´s film on August Bournonville, "The Pas de Trois” from “La Conservatorie”, Pas de deux from “Kermes in Bruges”, Pas de deux from “la Vestale” and Pas de Sept from ”A Folk´s Tale.”
Dance2go will run from September 25 – May 10 with 8 performances at the Old Stage.
Next up is another run of John Neumeiers popular “Romeo and Juliet” from October to November with 10 performances on the Old Stage.
New Drums
"Giant Steps" will get 8 performances from November 6 – 23. The group of three European choreographers will bring their work to RDB for the first time. The Group includes: Bobbi Jene with “Pierre”, Sharon Eyal and Gaibeha: “Bedroom Folks” and finally Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker´s” Verklärte Nacht”.
The RDB in-house modern company “Corpus” will join Giant Steps for the performance.
Next up is soloist Tobias Praetorius, who is creating a children ballet “Dance Fewer”, based on a popular children´s programme. "Dance Fewer" will run from October 13 – 19.with 8 performances.
For Christmas, Royal Danish Ballet will once again perform George Balanchine´s “The Nutcracker” from November 26 to December 22 with 26 performances at the Old Stage.
Nikolaj Hübbe´s ”La Sylphide” will make only four performances from January 6 – 9. Staying on the Bournonville line, "A Folk´s Tale" will have 9 performances between January 22 – March 22 on The Opera Stage.
In March and May, “The Hübbery”, a talk and dance program, will deliver two different programmes in March 3th and 12th, and yet another run from May 17 -18 at the Old Stage.
This is followed by my own favorite, George Balanchine´s “Jewels” which will be back on the Old Stage for 10 performances from March 3 to May 21.
Finally, Nikolaj Hübbe will present a new version of “Don Quixote” with 12 performances from May 7 to June 4 at the Old Stage.
Looking at the roster there are lot to admire – but also a lot to question. Some of the chosen works has been performed for a significantly long period. And is the time right to question whether we really need yet another run of the Balanchine’s “Nutcracker”?
Likewise should the light weight ”Come Fly Away” continue to stay for yet another run? It is wellknown that Nikolaj Hübbe is keen on bringing new audiences to ballet. However, is this the right way to keep going or would it be a better strategy to present newer and more meaty creations?
