”The World Ballet”
July 14, 2021
“The World Ballet” displays their 2021 season in Copenhagen.
In 2008, Opera Singer Jens-Christian Wandt took the initiative to present a summer program with primarily RDB dancers.
For each year, the repertoire and the number of audience has grown from a small event to where it is now. This season will include 11 performances in 12th cities all over Denmark.
The contribution from the Royal Danish Ballet principals and dancers are now sharing the stage with Royal Ballet, probably due to Steven Mcrae involvement in the “World Ballet” as Artistic Director. The Copenhagen audience could now enjoy Royal Ballet stars like Lauren Cuthbertson, Marcelino Sambé and Federico Bonelli in addition to leading RDB stars Ida Praetorius, Tobias Praetorius and Astrid Elbo.
Another big treat for the dancers and the audience, was the location “Sølyst” outside Copenhagen, Gifted with a great park and lot of beautiful views, “Sølyst“ is the perfect venue for outside entertainment.
Come Back
Astrid Elbo got a shot of the White Swan in the outtake of “Swan Lake” partnered to a high degree by Alban Lendorf, our greet star, who unfortunately has suffered several injuries over the last seasons.
Seeing him back on stage not only brought ought strong memories but also gained hope of seeing him back on the big stage. I hope that it might happen.
The “Swan Lake segment” showed that his talent, skills and audience appeal is still there. Tall and elegant Astrid Elbo also showed that she could be a strong Odette/Odile in time.
Family Business
The Praetorius siblings also displayed their talents. Principal Ida Praetorius danced the Bournonville classic “The Pas de Deux from August Bournonville´s “The Flower Festival in Genzano” with Marcelino Sambé who also danced “I got Rhythm”.
Together with her brother Tobias, they presented fellow Dane Kim Brandstrup’s newly created outstanding “Awakening” for the siblings to great applause.
For Tobias Praetorius there was yet another treat. He presented his own ballet “Where the World Ends” with music by Alexander Mckenzie. In general the combinations by the Danish and international dancers worked very well.
However, the decision to include a large segment of opera numbers for singers Jens-Chr. Wandt and Clara Thomsen with the small, but brilliant duo of Alexander McKenzie and Niklas Valentin, took too much time from the brilliant RDB and Royal Ballet stars.
It was the dancers, who proved to be the real stars.
