In 2017, RDB dancer Tobias Praetorius got his big break in the dominating role of Herman in Liam Scarlett´s creation “Queen of Spades” for Royal Danish Ballet. Although he already had covered a broad repertoire including character roles as trolls, modern dance and classic ballet, his interpretation of Herman showed that he could also carry the role of leading man and in this case, a very complex character.

However, this magnificent performance did not lead to bigger chances in leading roles. He was more or less stocked with the same supporting roles; he already had presented and developed for the company.

He then engaged in a project with the classical ensemble Trio Viviro on cocreating a new format for dance and music. The first season took place last year and became a significant succes. Now the partnership is back, this time with more dancers and impressive choreography by significant choreographers.

 

The New Reality for Corpus

A few days ago, I got the press release on Corpus new production, Swedish choreographer Martin Forsberg’s Prefecture. The release was rather short on the ballet, but made much out of two other changes. Corpus now has their own entrance and they have a lounge with a bar. 

Corpus was formed as an in-house company in 2012 to give the RDB dancers an opportunity to try new formats and create their own performances. Corpus, under the helmet of RDB dancers Esther Wilkinson and Tim Matiakis had presented a very wide repertoire, including the smash hit “I Føling” based on Danish war veterans. In this week a law is passed that gives the PTSD suffering war veterans a better treatment and support. More than anything it was "I Føling" that really brought the issue to attention. 

However, over the years, Corpus has developed into a more niche-oriented direction, and instead of in-house choreographers have cooperated with outside choreographers and artists from other fields. The strategy has resulted in some rather obscure ballets and in outstanding works by strong choreographers like Jo Strømgren.

Compared to his productions of”Napoli”, “A Folk´s Tale”, “La Sylphide” and “Swan Lake”, Nikolaj Hübbe, together with co-director Silja Schandorff is taking the conservative route with the new production of “Giselle”. There is no time travel, nor any gender change, and the décor and costumes, although bold, stays close to the norm. The focus is where it should be and the result is a brilliant production carried by the youngest and brightest stars of Royal Danish Ballet.

Royal Danish Ballet made every effort to impress for beloved Prima Ballerina Gudrun Bojesen's farewell performance. Through live and video performances, the company celebrated the unique ballerina's many contributions to the company, her strong viewpoints on company repertoire and her dedication to the Bournonville heritage. It became a night where miracles happened, but also a night that strongly showed where RDB should be heading and which roads should not be travelled.

Since former RDB star Peter Bo Bendixen took over the small historic Pantomime Theatre in the TIVOLI Gardens, he has proved to be the most ambitious ballet master in the company´s century long history.

On top of the daily Comedia del Arte pantomimes, the company now produces Bournonville ballets, including Bendixen’s own production of “La Sylphide”, works by moderns choreographers like Tim Rushton, Sebastian Kloborg and Tim Matiakis. There is a biannual production of Bendixen’s “Nutcracker” in the larger concert hall. This season, former Bolshoi, Royal Danish Ballet and San Francisco Ballet star, Yuri Possokhov has made a version of “Cinderella” to a score by Danish and international popstar Oh Land, who started her career as a ballet child at The RDB school.
